THE NILAYA, AN ARTIST’S HOUSE

Vague Bleue au NILAYA

In the NILAYA and the SSS Villa, you live in the middle of art. Each room is decorated differently with my drawings and paintings and the ones of my friends. I decorated the garden with mosaics. They are on the barbecue place, on the outside kitchen, under the pergola…

I paint since I can remember. I exhibited in Paris and Cologne. In those two towns, I gave the opportunity to young artists to meet a larger public.

Kit GRAAS dessinIn Mauritius, my style changed drastically. The light entered into my works. I got used to the bright colors, present at all the festivals. I learned to work with these colors.

In my work, you’ll trace my fascination of this interesting island : nature with the dolphins, the waves, the spiritual life with meditation, angels…Kit GRAAS dessin Ange

I paint less now, as I don’t have the space to hang all my paintings on the walls. For my sculptures, I use local materials that I find in Mauritius. I work very much with the flotsam and jetsam on the beaches. My last series are drawn with black Indian ink on gold coated Chinese paper – which is destined to be burnt during religious ceremonies.

Kit GRAAS Witch SwitchI produce also souvenirs with the local products, like witches out of the remains of the textile industry, jam with the bergamots of my garden, picture frames and jewellery

To grasp the reality of Mauritius, I write, paint, print and bind artist’s books, mainly for children. Fascinated by nature here in Mauritius, I wrote a book about eatable plants. I illustrated and published a poetry book ‘Moissonneurs d’Etoiles’ with a local poet. I wrote a crime story about the investigation of a young Mauritian journalist. All those unfortunately in French. But for the last one, I did not find a publisher yet.
